Celebrating God’s Care      Oct. 28, 2018

Worldwide Outreach Teaching School

In today’s passage we find instructions for worship that should help all generations of God’s people to never forget God’s care. In these celebrations, we find wedded together typical agricultural practices that were familiar to all ancient people and the story of God’s faithfulness to His people. Altogether, this passage describes the three most important Jewish holidays that celebrate God’s blessings upon His people and the special care that He gave when He delivered them from Egypt.

We examined the dangers and consequences of rebellion and the need for placing us complete trust in God.

We will gain a deeper understanding of the importance of honoring God for what He did in the past and is doing in the present.

16:1-8, Please read the Deuteronomy 16:1-8,

Observe the month of Abib and celebrate the Passover of the LORD your God, because in the month of Abib he brought you out of Egypt by night. Sacrifice as the Passover to the LORD your God an animal from your flock or herd at the place the LORD will choose as a dwelling for his Name. Do not eat it with bread made with yeast, but for seven days eat unleavened bread, the bread of affliction, because you left Egypt in haste--so that all the days of your life, you may remember the time of your departure from Egypt. Let no yeast be found in your possession in all your land for seven days. Do not let any of the meat you sacrifice on the evening of the first day remain until morning. You must not sacrifice the Passover in any town the LORD your God gives you, except in the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name.  6, there you must sacrifice the Passover in the evening, when the sun goes down, on the anniversary of your departure from Egypt. Roast it and eat it at the place the LORD your God will choose. Then in the morning return to your tents. For six days eat unleavened bread and on the seventh day hold an assembly to the LORD your God and do no work. Count off seven weeks from the time you begin to put the sickle to the standing grain.

Commentary: 16:1-8

Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread 16:1-8

During Passover, God’s people are called upon to remember what God did in Egypt for the Israelites. Although they were once oppressed slaves in Egypt, God brought them out of their bondage (see Exodus 12:1-13). Each year in the spring during the month of Abib (March-April), God’s people were to remember what God had done for them so many years ago.

Combined with Passover is the Feast of the Unleavened Bread (see Exodus 12:14-20). This festival required the Israelites to remove all yeast from their homes and to then eat unleavened bread for six days that to remember there was no time to wait for escape from Egypt.  (When the Pharaoh freed the Israelites, it is said that they left in such a hurry that they could not wait for bread dough to rise (leaven). In commemoration, for the duration of Passover, no leavened bread is eaten. ) From these two festivals, we can discern that they made them significant to God’s people. First is the remembrance of what God had done in the past. Second, they celebrated together as a community.

Count off seven weeks from the time you begin to put the sickle to the standing grain. Then celebrate the Feast of Weeks to the LORD your God by giving a freewill offering in proportion to the blessings the LORD your God has given you. And rejoice before the LORD your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name--you, your sons and daughters, your menservants and maidservants, the Levites in your towns, and the aliens, the fatherless and the widows living among you. Remember that you were slaves in Egypt, and follow carefully these decrees.

Feast of Weeks 16:9-12, Commentary from the Faith Connection P.58,

What is described here is a condensed version of the fuller instructions found in Leviticus 23:15-21.

This one is not tied to a specific act of God in the past but is meant to be a celebration of what God has done for His people in the present. Once again, this celebration does center on God; on His present provision for His people. It also was a celebration done together as the people of God. He had gifted them with what they needed to live and the only appropriate response was to celebrate that fact all together, from those who were blessed with much to those who were blessed with little. And finally, the festival involved something very common, the giving of the grain itself. If one has truly been blessed of God, the only appropriate response is to give back in kind.

3.      住棚節的節期The Festival of Tabernacles申命記 Deuteronomy 16:13-15,

Read Deuteronomy 16:13-15, to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles for seven days after you have gathered the produce of your threshing floor and your winepress. Be joyful at your Feast--you, your sons and daughters, your menservants and maidservants, and the Levites, the aliens, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns. For seven days celebrate the Feast to the LORD your God at the place the LORD will choose. For the LORD your God will bless you in all your harvest and in all the work of your hands, and your joy will be complete.

解經:The Faith Connection P.58, 在此的最後一個節日是Tabernacles(住棚  節或叫做帳篷) 。

Commentary from the Faith Connection P. 58: The final festival listed here is the Festival of Tabernacles (or Booths). The festival is also described in Leviticus 23:33-36. This festival was celebrated in late summer when all the harvests for the year were completed, (olives and grapes). During this harvest, the people would stay in the field and dwell in temporary shelters called tabernacles or booths. Such shelters were strong reminders of the days the ancient Israelites spent in the wilderness. More importantly, like the Feast of Weeks, the purpose of this celebration was to express joy to God for His blessingscares upon His people.

The Heart of All Worship to God: 16:16-17, Deuteronomy 16:16-17,

1). Read The Faith Connection, p.59, These three Jewish festivals capture well what should be at the heart of all worship to God. First, all God’s people were required to celebrate them all together. In addition, these were times of remembering. Whether it was remembering what God had done in the past or simply rejoicing in how God had blessed them in the present, God’s people remembered together the God upon which their hope and faith centered. And finally, while the focus is on the story of God’s faithfulness to His people, with the everyday lives of God’s people. The worship involved eating, drinking, and offerings of common things like the grain of the field.

Read the Commentary of NIV: Israel’s kings did not heed this warning and their behavior led to their downfall. Solomon had everything going for him, but when he became rich, built up a large army, and married many wives, his heart turned from God (1 King 11:1-10). Out of Soloman’s sin came Israel’s disobedience, division, and captivity.

For Christians, we celebrate what God has done and is still doing for us, His people. When we do this together as a community of God’s people, we truly have learned how to celebrate God in ways very similar to those who have done so faithfully in the past.

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?” Therefore, we have to worship our great creator, our God.
