Happy is the man who does not go in the company of sinners, or take his place in the way of evil-doers, or in the seat of those who do not give honour to the Lord.

God sees our needs and answers our prayers according to His will.

We explored the truth that the good news of the gospel is for all people.

We will explore the truth that we can confidently bring our needs  before God in prayer because He can do things beyond our expectations.

12:1-5                    1. HEROD’S PLOT: Read Acts 12:1-5

1 It was about this time that King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them. 2 He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword. 3 When he saw that this pleased the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also. This happened during the Feast of Unleavened Bread.            4 After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for public trial after the Passover. 5 So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.

Commentary: Acts 12:1-5, NIV.p.2340

12:3, Peter was arrested as the church  leader, during the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the week-long festival directly following Passover. This was a strategic move, since more Jews were in the city than usual, and Herod could impress the most people.

12:5 Herod’s plan undoubtedly was to execute Peter, but the believers were praying for Peter’s safety. The earnest prayer of the church significantly affected the outcome of these events. Prayer changes things, so pray often and with confidence.

2. Miraculous Prison Escape: Read Acts 12:6-11, 6 The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at the entrance. 7 Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. "Quick, get up!" he said, and the chains fell off Peter's wrists.

8 Then the angel said to him, "Put on your clothes and sandals." And Peter did so. "Wrap your cloak around you and follow me," the angel told him.

9 Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision.

10 They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself, and they went through it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him.

11 Then Peter came to himself and said, "Now I know without a doubt that the Lord sent his angel and rescued me from Herod's clutches and from everything the Jewish people were anticipating."

Commentary: Acts 12:6-11, Peter was calm as he slept the evening prior to his hearing and impending death: Soldiers were chained to him, and others guarded the prison entrance. Surprisingly, no one noticed the angel’s appearance! Peter was so oblivious that the angel had to strike him and help him up and dictated basic instructions like putting on his clothes and following the angel out of the prison!

They passed guards without incident. When they approached the prison’s iron gate leading into the city, it opened automatically for them. After Peter was safely outside the prison, only after the angel’s departure did Peter realized what happened. And he said that the Lord sent his angel and rescued me from Herod (v.11)

 3. Surprised Prayer Meeting: Read Acts 12:12-17, 12 When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying. 13 Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer the door. 14 When she recognized Peter's voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, "Peter is at the door!" 15 "You're out of your mind," they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, "It must be his angel." 16 But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished.17 Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. "Tell James and the brothers about this," he said, and then he left for another place.

  Commentary: Acts 12:12-17,  Insert from N.I.V. p.2341

12:12, John Mark wrote the Gospel of Mark. His mothers house was large enough to accommodate a meeting of many believers. An upstairs room in this house may have been the location of Jesus last supper with his disciples (Luke 22:8)

12:13-15, The prayers of the group of believers were answered, even as they prayed. But when the answer arrived at the door, they didn’t believe it. We should be people of faith who believe that God answers the prayers of those who seek his will. When the answer comes, don’t be surprised; be thankful!

12:17, This James was Jesus’ brother, who became a leader in the Jerusalem church (15:13; Galatians 1:19). The James who was killed (12:2) was John’s brother and one of the original 12 disciples. (N.I.V. p.2342)

4.Conclusion: Connect to Your Life   and the World

1 Herod’s Plot: Acts 12:1-5,

prayer is a great privilege, but it is

   also mysterious. Acts 12 provides

another glimpse into the role of

   prayer in Peter’s life.

 2 Miraculous Prison Escape: 12:6-11

God answered in a surprising way by sending an angel to free him. Peter was sleeping. The angel had to wake him up and give step-by-step directions for normal tasks. how incredible it was for chains to fall off, doors to open by themselves, and guards fail to notice them leaving. God moving in a miraculous way, by sending an angel to free Peter (see verse 11).

 3. Surprised Prayer Meeting: 12:12-17,

   The church prayed “earnestly”

for Peter, God’s answer to prayers

for Peter was “Yes”, even though

He waited until the night before the

   trial to free Peter.
