                     The
Destructive Effects of Sin

Genesis 3:1-24

        Dr. Meiman Lai Saidi

Preface:  Session Truth by Bill Manning, he said that sin
robs us of the rich relationship we were created to have with God, others, and
creation. Adam and Eve were blaming and shaming that facing the consequences;
Life in the Garden of Eden must have been wonderful, yet Adam and Eve gave it
up for a moment of ill-considered gratification and disobedience to God brought
a severe penalty. This week's lesson exposes "
The Destructive Effects of Sin"

Scripture Reading
Genesis 3:1-9

  1. Now
    the serpent was more crafty
than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the
woman, "Did God really say, ''You must not eat from any tree in
    the garden''?"
  2. The
woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in
    the garden,
  3. but
God did say, ''You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the
middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.''
    "
  4. "You
will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman.
  5. "For
God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you
will be like God, knowing good and evil."

  1. When the woman saw that the fruit of the
tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for
gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her
husband, who was with her, and he ate it
    .
  2. Then the eyes of both of them were opened,
and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together
    and made coverings for themselves.
  3. Then the man and his wife heard the sound
of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the
day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden.
  4. But the LORD God called to the man,
    "Where are you?"

A.     Look Where You Are:  看阿  你在那兒?
Genesis 3:1-9

                        The sin of
Adam and Eve
disobedience to God that they  have
done what God has expressly forbidden, they cannot bring themselves to face
Him. They were made to live in God's presence, but now they are fleeing from
Him in fear.  All that they find in their
hiding place is darkness, fear and fig leaves to cover themselves, but it is
impossible to hide from God.

                        God was drawn to
Adam and Eve not by a desire to punish them, nor by a need for satisfaction,
but by love. This same God sees us, and knows us, and loves us. And He comes to
our hiding places too.

                        Why should God
cry out such words, "Where are you (v. 9)?" if God knows everything? Because
this
question is not spoken for God's benefit but it was spoken for the benefit
of Adam and Eve; when God asked them, "Where are you?" He was saying, "Look
where you are! See where your sins have brought you." That question to face
up that had been brought on by their sins.

B. What
is This You Have Done?
Genesis 3:10-13

  1. He answered, "I
heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I
    hid."

  1. And he said,
"Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree
that I commanded you not to eat from?"
  2. The man said,
"The woman you put here with me--she gave me some fruit from the
    tree, and I ate it."
  3. Then the LORD God
said to the woman, "What is this you have done?" The woman
said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate."

Adam was pointing
his finger at Eve and saying, "It was her fault!" 3:12.

To Eve the Lord said, "What
is this you have done?" (3:13). And
Eve followed the example set by Adam. She said, "The serpent deceived me, and I
ate" (3:13b).

            Instead of
admitting her guilt, she blamed the serpent for what she had done.     All
of us have had the painful experience of being unjustly shamed.

C. Facing the Consequences
Genesis 3
:

Because You Have Done This:

  1. So the LORD God
said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, "Cursed
are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals! You will
crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.
  2. And I will put
enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and
hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.

  1. To the woman he
said, "I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with
pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your
husband, and he will rule over you."
  2. To Adam he said,
"Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about
which I commanded you, ''You must not eat of it,'' "Cursed is the
ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all
    the days of your life.
  3. It will produce
thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the
    field.
  4. By the sweat of
your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground,
since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will
    return."
  5. Adam named his
wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living.

  1. The LORD God made
garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.
  2. And the LORD God
said, "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and
evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also
from the tree of life and eat, and live forever."
  3. So the LORD God
banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which
    he had been taken.
  4. After he drove
the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden
cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the
way to the tree of life.

When
Satan spoke to Eve through the serpent, he said, "You will not
certainly die" (Genesis 3:4), for God's judgment against Adam and Eve was the
certainty of death (3:19b). It was Jesus who said, "When [the devil] lies, he
speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies" (John 8:44).

In the Garden of Eden, God announced that a day will come when the
offspring of woman will crush the serpent's head (Genesis 3:15). This is a promise of Christ's
ultimate victory over Satan. Until that day comes, Satan remains our enemy.
He continues to lie and tempt humans to think that their way is better than
God's. The willfulness that rejects God's way is the very essence of sin, and
sin always has consequences.

As a consequence of her rebellion, the woman would experience anguish in
bearing and raising children. Sin would distort and impair her relationship
with her husband (3:16). God told
Adam that because of his sin, his toil to work the land and produce food
would be very difficult, and death would be unavoidable (3:17-19).

CONCLUSIONS: 結論:

God's
anger
is an expression of grace, it brings us to repent. It is quite
possible that believers are more familiar with God's anger than are unbelievers. The
Scriptures tell us, "The Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens
everyone he accepts as his son" (Hebrews 12:6).

God is the initiator創始主. He knows everything about us and
still loves us.

God gave Adam and Eve a second chance. The
same gracious love by which He saved Adam and Eve. "Give thanks to the Lord
for he is
love and never give up!

QUESTIONS:

  1. After
eating the forbidden fruit, what were the immediate consequences of
    their actions? ([1v. 7]. [2] [v. 8].)
  2. Adam
and Eve felt shame and fear following their sin. Why does sin always
bring feelings such as shame and fear?
  3. What
does it mean to you that God does not force you into serving and obeying
Him? Is Genesis 3 trying to tell us something about human nature and a
problem that we all have with regard to self-sovereignty? If so, what do
we need to do about it?
  4. Where
do you see God's grace at work in this story?
  5. How
we can stop the blame game and take ownership of our own actions?

SUGGESTIONS:

1. Read 1st Corinthians 10:12, "if
you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don''t fall! 13  No temptation has seized you except what is
common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond
what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out
so that you can stand up under it.
