Unit 1: The Savior ComesSession 4

Title: ㄧ嬰孩出生 "A Child Is Born"  12/23/2018

Luke 2:1-20

Worldwide Outreach Teaching School

In today’s session, the wait is finally over. Angelic appearances, miraculous signs, and words of prophesy have all led to this point—

A Savior is born. Hallelujah! The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and

Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth (John1:14).”

We examined the rejoicing felt by the birth of John the Baptist and his importance to the story of Jesus.

We will look at the way in which God expressed His love toward humanity by sending His Son to this world…

“In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.)       And everyone went to his own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea; to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.”

1.          愛賜下Love Came Down: 路加福音Luke 2: 1-7

A Roman census (registration) was taken to aid military conscription or tax collection. The Jews didn’t have to serve in the Roman army, but they could not avoid paying taxes. Augustus’s decree went out in God’s perfect timing and according to God’s perfect plan to bring his Son into the world.

a. The government forced Joseph to make a long trip just to pay his taxes. His fiancée, who had to go with him, was going to have a baby any moment. But when they arrived in Bethlehem, they couldn’t even find a place to stay. When we do God’s will, we are not guaranteed a comfortable life. But we are promised that everything, even our discomfort, has meaning in God’s plan.

b. God controls all history. By the decree of Emperor Augustus, Jesus was born in the very town prophesied for his birth (Micah 5:2). Joseph and Mary were both descendants of David. The Old Testament is filled with prophecies that the Messiah would be born in David’s royal line (see, for example, Isaiah 11:1; Jeremiah 33:15; Ezekiel 37:24; Hosea 3:5).

c. Bands of cloth were used to keep a baby warm and safe. The custom of wrapping infants this way is still practiced in many Mideastern countries and Taiwan, and it was done in my Family, including me when I was a little girl.

(Glory Good News Great Joy):

“And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David, a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger." Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."

What a birth announcement! The shepherds were terrified, but their fear turned to joy as the angels announced the Messiah’s birth. First the shepherds ran to see the baby; then they spread the word. Jesus is your Messiah, your Savior. Do you look forward to meeting him in prayer and in his Word each day? Have you discovered a Lord so wonderful that

you can’t help sharing your joy with your friends?

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about." So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen which were just as they had been told.

The shepherds no doubt had been spellbound by the heavenly announcement. Now they rightly turned their attention to the event itself and “hurried” (somewhat as Mary had “hurried” to visit her relative Elizabeth in 1:39). They understood that the angelic message had been a word from “the Lord.” Upon arriving in Bethlehem they found the family, “Mary and Joseph and the baby” and were quick to “spread the word…about this child.” God’s in-breaking of love led the shepherds to worship. It also prepared the way for the worship of Jesus by countless others who would hear the story directly from them, or read it in Luke’s gospel. The divine revelation of love compelled them to tell this majestic story. In a quieter way, Mary carried the events “in her heart” where she “treasured” and “pondered them.” We pause to notice that Mary, a woman, was mentioned first in verse 16, unusual for that culture. These moments in Luke’s gospel that seem to give additional insight into the heart of Mary have led some scholars to suggest that Mary was one of the sources for Luke’s gospel.

Certainly she will forever hold a place of honor as the one through whom God’s glorious love was especially revealed.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14

a. The angel said that they should not be afraid! their words are words for us today.

b. Jesus came to make a right relationship with God possible for anyone who places their faith and trust in Him.

c. Jesus’ birth the ultimate expression of God’s love for humanity. (See John 3:16- "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.)
