Happy is the man who does not go in the company of sinners, or take his place in the way of evil-doers, or in the seat of those who do not give honour to the Lord.

Deuteronomy is essentially a copy of the law rendered to the Hebrews so their history would live in the next generation. It is significant that the family is prominent in this teaching. The Colossians passage teaches a new way to think of essential human relationships: power and love. Consider the resources of Scripture for defining all relationships within the boundary of love. This week we discover that making sense of Paul’s writings about “household codes” can be difficult. These were ground rules for harmonious relationships within Christian families.               Think about in what ways can you aid in the faith development of your family

We examined what the Bible says about how to resolve conflict in a godly way.

We Will examine what it looks like to express holiness within our family life.

11:1-7,                  1. Faith at Home: Scripture reading   Deuteronomy 11:1-7,

  1. Love the LORD your God and keep his requirements, his decrees, his laws and his commands always.
  2. Remember today that your children were not the ones who saw and experienced the discipline of the LORD your God: his majesty, his mighty hand, his outstretched arm;
  3. the signs he performed and the things he did in the heart of Egypt, both to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his whole country;
  4. what he did to the Egyptian army, to its horses and chariots, how he overwhelmed them with the waters of the Red Sea as they were pursuing you, and how the LORD brought lasting ruin on them.
  5. It was not your children who saw what he did for you in the desert until you arrived at this place,
  6. and what he did to Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab the Reubenite, when the earth opened its mouth right in the middle of all Israel and swallowed them up with their households, their tents and every living thing that belonged to them.
  7. But it was your own eyes that saw all these great things the LORD has done.

Commentary: Deuteronomy 11:1-7, Memory joined with faithful practice offers hope for a resilient witness before the world. Moses knew this important fact and provided a powerful example. The story of God has unfolded over many generations of failure as the Hebrews inched toward the Promised Land. Moses urged those assembled to embrace the God who had delivered them by His mighty hand. Further, he called them to keep the decrees, laws, and commands. The underlying theme found in this passage reminds the reader that God has been faithful, but we are called to remember and practice the faith.

A particularly powerful image found in this passage is the teaching of faith at home. Moses knew that the story of God’s deliverance must first live at home around the dinner table. Moses reminds those who love God “to keep his requirements, his decrees, his laws, and his commands” (11:1b). God not only delivered the Hebrews, but He provided a clear path toward success. God had indeed brought them to this moment.

Holiness is not a concept locked up at church. Rather it is lived out every day in conscious memory and anticipation of the faithfulness of God. The Scripture witnesses to the presence of challenges, but also powerfully reminds us that God has and will deliver.

2. Fostering Faith: Deuteronomy 11:18-21,  18 Fix these words of mine in your hearts   and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.     19 Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 20 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, 21 so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land that the LORD swore to give your forefathers, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth.

Commentary:  Fostering Faith: Deuteronomy 11:18-21, The family can be the essential element for fostering the faith in the minds and hearts of the young. Moses urges: “Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up” (11:19). This happens when we keep His requirements - remember that holiness brings fullness of life - and allow the light of God’s promises to shine into the darkness. The link between faith and virtue provides a witness to the world.

3. Grace Defines Life: Colossians 3:18-25             18 Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.  19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.  20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.  21 Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.  22 Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to win their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord.  23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. 25 Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for his wrong, and there is no favoritism.

Commentary: Grace Defines Life: Colossians 3:18-25, Paul gives rules for three sets of household relationships: 1) husbands and wives, 2) parents and children, and 3) masters and slaves. In each case there is mutual responsibility to submit and love, to obey and encourage, to work hard and be fair. Examine your family and work relationships. Do you relate to others as God intended? See Ephesians 5:21-6:9 for similar instructions.

3. Conclusions: Love at Home, through families, God tells the story of His love and grace to succeeding generations.                       POINT:                                                                    1) Faith at Home: Love the Lord, Keep His Law, His decrees and His commands.

2) Always teaching children: No matter they are home or outside keeping remind them, write on the doorframes of your houses to remind them the law, decrees for fostering their faith.

3) Grace Defines Life: Three sets of household relationships: 1) We are with spouse 2) with parents or children, and 3) with masters or slaves to submit and love,   to obey and encourage, to work hard and be fair.
