Jesus came to bring light to a darkened world.”

To open ourselves up to God’s shining light and discover ways to reflect His light in our world. Chapters 60—62 in the book of Isaiah make it abundantly clear that God would save His people, because Jesus came to bring light to a darkened worlds

We looked at how Jesus came to fulfill the role as

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace in our lives.

We will look at how the light of Jesus is everlasting and brings salvation

and hope that will last forever.

60:1-9      1. Arise, Shine: Isaiah 60:1-9,

(聖經靈修版p.1246)

"Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the LORD rises upon you and his glory appears over you. Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. "Lift up your eyes and look about you: All assemble and come to you; your sons come from afar, and your daughters are carried on the arm.

Then you will look and be radiant, your heart will throb and swell with joy; the wealth on the seas will be brought to you, to you the riches of the nations will come. Herds of camels will cover your land, young camels of Midian and Ephah. And all from Sheba will come, bearing gold and incense and proclaiming the praise of the LORD. All Kedar's flocks will be gathered to you, the

rams of Nebaioth will serve you; they will be

accepted as offerings on my altar, and I will

adorn my glorious temple. "Who

are these that fly along like clouds, like doves

to their nests? Surely

the islands look to me;

in the lead are the ships of Tarshish, bringing your sons from afar,

with their silver and

gold, to the honor

of the LORD your God,

the Holy One of Israel, for he has endowed

you with splendor.”

Commentary: Isaiah 60:1-9,            Isaiah did not leave his Judean audience in a hopeless world of darkness. Though their sins created the world of darkness in which they existed, the prophet announced to them God’s imminent arrival into their world. Their sins separated them from God (see 59:2), but God’s arrival would shine a bright light into their world of darkness. The coming of God’s glory into the midst of a sinful world can only be explained as a marvelous display of God’s grace.

The prophet reminded his audience that darkness remained as a reality among the peoples of the earth. Their positive response to God’s light would make them so radiant that the nations that dwell in darkness would flow to them. The prophet also anticipated that Judean exiles living in other parts of the world also would return to Zion because of the radiance of the city. Zion would be the place to which the wealth of the nations flow for the glory and honor of the Lord.

The prophet ended his magnificent vision of the glory of Zion with the reminder that all of these had one purpose: “to honor the Lord your God(v. 9). Isaiah reminded his audience that they need to “arise, shine” in order for the Lord to accomplish the purpose of His coming to them. Without their positive response to the arrival of God’s glory, the earth would remain in darkness. Jesus, the revelation of God’s glory, said to His disciples: “You are the light of the world…let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16; see also John 1:14).

2. Everlasting Light: Scriptures

   Reading: Isaiah 60:18-22

18 No longer will violence be heard in your land, nor ruin or destruction within your borders, but you will call your walls Salvation and your gates Praise.

19 The sun will no more be your light by day, nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you, for the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory. 20 Your sun will never set again, and your moon will wane no more; the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your days of sorrow will end.

21 Then will all your people be righteous and they will possess the land forever. They are the shoot I have planted, the work of my hands, for the display of my splendor. 22 The least of you will become a thousand, the smallest a mighty nation. I am the LORD; in its time I will do this swiftly."

Commentary: 60:18-22,

The final verses of our passage

In Isaiah, beginning with verse

19, create an incredible image of

Jerusalem basking in an

“everlasting” light of God’s

glory. As these final passages

unfold, many of the themes

promised in previous sessions

appear: the end of sorrow, the

establishment of righteousness

'(as goodness and kindness

from last week), and the

security of having an

established place, and

magnificent growth (v.22) all

through the fruitful labor of

God’s own swift hand. This

vision seems to have an almost

 timeless quality (vv.19-20),

considering God’s everlasting

 light and glory.

3. Conclusions:

1) Arise, Shine: 60:1-9,

This light, according to verse 3 the source of the light is directly God, the very glory of the Lord (v. 1),

Jerusalem’s dawning “new day” (v. 3) this “new day” is directly related to their worship (v. 7) and honor of God (v. 9). Jerusalem seems to be the place for family reunions (v. 4) restore their dignity, re-establish their worship, and reconcile their enemies (vv. 5-9).

2) Everlasting Light: 60:18-22

There will be a beautiful future that God promised in the Revelation 21:23-24 and 22:5. (Insert from the Faith Connection & Bible)
