The Forgiven Sinner

The Forgiven Sinner

May 6, 2018, Session 10, Unit 1: Women in the Bible

Worldwide Outreach Teaching School

We explored the ways in which God is at work in our lives during difficult times. We read a story of God’s grace being poured out on a widow and prophet during their time of need.

We will examine the story of a woman who sought and received forgiveness from Jesus.

Today we will look at a story of a women who, by faith, received peace and forgiveness from Jesus—the Messiah. God’s love is expressed to all. It’s not based on race, social status, gender, or financial wealth. Throughout the Gospels, we see Jesus connecting with a wide variety of people—both the known sinner and the religious leader. Each day we encounter people who need the forgiving touch of God in their lives.

This is where today’s story begins. Please read the scriptures:

A. A Sinful Woman Anoints the Jesus’ Feet:

  1. Luke 7:36-38, Now one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, so he went to the Pharisee's house and reclined at the table.
  2. When a woman who had lived a sinful life in that town learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume,
  3. And as she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.

Commentary from the NIV:                                                                   v. 36, A similar incident occurred later in Jesus ministry (see  Matthew 26:6-13; Mark 14:3-9; John 12:1-11)

v. 37, Alabaster jars were carved, expensive, and beautiful.

v. 38, Although the woman was not an invited guest, she entered the house anyway and knelt behind Jesus at his feet. In Jesus’ day, it was customary to recline while eating. Dinner quests would lie on couches with their heads near the table, propping themselves up on one elbow and stretching their feet out behind them. The woman could easily anoint Jesus’ feet without approaching the table.

B. A Lesson on Gratitude (Forgiven on Love More): Lk.  7:39-47

  1. When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is--that she is a sinner."
  2. Jesus answered him, "Simon, I have something to tell you." "Tell me, teacher," he said.
  3. "Two men owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.
  4. Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he canceled the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?"
  5. Simon replied, "I suppose the one who had the bigger debt canceled." "You have judged correctly," Jesus said.
  6. Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.
  7. You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet.
  8. You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet.
  9. Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven--for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little."

Commentary from the NIV. P2147, V. 44, Luke contrasts the Pharisees with sinners – and the sinners come out ahead. Simon had committed several social errors in neglecting to wash Jesus’ feet (a courtesy extended to quests because sandaled feet got very dirty), anoint his head with oil, and offer him the kiss to greeting. Did Simon perhaps feel that he was too good to treat Jesus as an equal? The sinful woman, by contrast, lavished tears, expensive perfume, and kisses on her Savior, in this story it is the grateful prostitute, and not the stingy religious leader, whose sins were forgiven. Although it is God’s grace through faith that saves us, and not acts of love or generosity, this woman’s act demonstrated her true faith, and Jesus honored her faith.

V. 47, Overflowing love is the natural response to forgiveness and the appropriate consequence of faith. But only those who realize the depth of their sin can appreciate the complete forgiveness God offers them. Jesus has rescued all of his followers, whether they were once extremely wicked or conventionally good, from eternal death. Do you appreciate the wideness of God’s mercy? Are you grateful for his forgiveness? (NIV Commentary p.2147)

 C. Blessing and Reinstatement: Luke  7:48-50

Luke 5:32, Jesus said, “I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." That woman accepted God’s forgiveness, thus expressing faith. By embracing God’s grace she experienced God’s salvation. Now, with the words Go in peace!’Jesus reinstated her into the community.

  1. Jesus said that the woman’s faith had saved her. Even she didn’t verbally express faith but by action – Therefore, we know that Actions speak louder than words.
  2. No matter how deep of our sins, God forgives our mistake – Therefore, we have to believe in Him.
  3. Be brave to express God’s love and forgiveness to others.

  1. How bold is your gratitude for God’s forgiveness
  2. Are you willing to overcome social norms to express your love for God
  3. 1 John 5:11-12, “And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12, he who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.

SING SONG:  Assurance of Eternal Life  Composed by Lai, Huiying (Hsiua‘ sue‘ im)   Attached on next page – Words:

And this is the testimony:

God has given us eternal life

And this eternal life is in his Son.

He who has the Son has life;

Have Eternal Life.

SING SONG:
