Unit 2. WHO IS JESUS (Mark Gospel)

Lesson 7 THE LORD OF TRUTH"           1/17/2021

4:21-34 Scriptures: Mark 4:21-34

Worldwide Outreach Teaching School, Dr. Meiman Lai Saidi (賴美滿校長)

Preface: Today’s session teaches the power a story can have to communicate important truths about the kingdom of God. Begin by telling the beginning of the story of the “Three Little Pigs” or the well-known children’s story or nursery thyme.

Jesus taught in an era of human history when very few could read or write, He communicated the truth He taught in ways that could be remembered without the aid of notes. What He taught was the truth that mattered for the eternal destiny of those who heard Him, and for us. Jesus taught as the Lord of Truth. To make the truths He taught memorable, Jesus taught by means of pointed word pictures and striking symbols.

Last Week: We looked at Jesus offers a new beginning to all who repent and believe.

This Week: We will look at how we must permit the clarity of God’s truth to permeate            our soul and live out that truth on a daily basis.

Mark 4:21-25,              1. THE BIGGER PICTURE: Mark 4:21-25,

Mark 4:26-32

21 He said to them, "Do you bring in a lamp      to put it under a bowl or a bed? Instead, don't you put it on its stand? 22 For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open. 23 If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear." 24 "Consider carefully what you hear," he continued. "With the measure you use, it will be measured to you--and even more. 25 Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him."

Commentary: Mark 4:21- 25                                     4:21, Do you know that you can become others’ light? If a lamp doesn’t help people see, it is useless. Does your life show other people how to find God and how to live for Him? If not, ask what “bowls” have extinguished your light. Complacency, resentment, stubbornness of heart, or disobedience could keep God’s light from shining through you to others.

4:21-24, The light of Jesus’ truth is revealed to us not hidden. But we may not be able to see or to use all of that truth right now. Only as we put God’s teachings into practice will we understand and see more of the truth. The truth is clear, but our ability to understand is imperfect. As we obey, we will sharpen our vision and increase our understanding (see James 1:22-25).

4:25, This verse simply means that we are responsible to use well what we have. How much we have is not nearly as important as what we do with it.

2. SEEDS OF KNOWLEDGE: Mark 4:26-32

26-29: 26, He also said, "This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. 27. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. 28. All by itself the soil produces grain--first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. 29. As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come."

Commentary: Mark 4:26-29, This parable about the kingdom of God, recorded only by Mark, reveals that spiritual growth is a continual, gradual process that is finally consummated in a harvest of spiritual maturity. We can understand the process of spiritual growth by comparing it to the slow but certain growth of a plant.

4:30-32, 30. Again he said, "What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? 31. It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest seed you plant in the ground. 32. Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds of the air can perch in its shade."

Commentary: 4:30-32, Jesus used this parable to explain that although Christianity had very small beginnings, it would grow into a worldwide community of believers. When you feel alone in your stand for Christ, realize that God is building a worldwide kingdom, He has faithful followers in every part of the world, and your faith, no matter how small, can join with that of others to accomplish great things.

3. UNTYING THE KNOTS:  Mark 4:33 – 34: 33 With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. 34 He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.

Commentary: 4:33-34, Jesus adapted His methods to his audience’s ability and desire to understand. He didn’t speak in parables to confuse people, but to challenge sincere seekers to discover the meaning of his words. Much of Jesus’ teaching was against hypocrisy and impure motives-characteristics of the religious leaders. Had Jesus spoken against the leaders directly, his public ministry would have been hampered. Those who listened carefully to Jesus knew what he was talking about.

POINT: THE LORD OF TRUTH -              We see obstacles; we recognize the power of evil; we fear that nothing will ever change for the better. But God’s truth triumphs. Jesus made this point through His parable of the mustard seed.

Through the Holy Spirit, we can truly change how we see the world, and that will change how we actually live. To end today’s session, re-examine the parable of the mustard seed in verses 30-32.
