Unit 2: The Savior ComesSession 7

Lord of the Sabbath"   1/13/2019

Luke 5:36-39; 6:1-11

Worldwide Outreach Teaching School

Today’s lesson is about the observance of every seventh day for worship and rest is one of the unique contributions of the Christian tradition. Jewish people keep the Sabbath holy for worship. What does it mean to keep the Sabbath holy? Take a look at a typical Sabbath celebration in Jesus’ time! The session today illustrates the deepening division around Jesus in His time. Jesus goes beyond our preconceived ideas of who He is and how He works in the world.

We looked at the mission of Jesus and the ways in which we can stay focused on living out the mission of God in our world.

We will understand that traditions can be counterproductive when they shift from worship and faithfulness to simply keeping human-made rules.

1.      Old and New—Living the Lawful請讀經文 Scriptures reading: 路加福音Luke 5: 36-39, 耶穌又設一個比喻、對他們說、沒有人把新衣服撕下一塊來、補在舊衣服上.

Jesus told them this parable: "No one tears a patch from a new garment and sews it on an old one. If he does, he will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old. And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins, the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins. And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for he says, 'The old is better.'

Commentary from N.I.V.: “Wineskins” were goatskins sewed together at the edges to form watertight bags. Because new wine expands as it ages, it had to be put in new, pliable wineskins. A used skin, having become more rigid, would burst and spill the wine. Like old wineskins, the Pharisees were too rigid to accept Jesus, who could not be contained in their traditions or rules. Christianity required new approaches, new traditions, and new structures. Our church programs and ministries should not be so structured that they have no room for a fresh touch of the Spirit, a new method, or a new idea. We, too, must be careful that our hearts do not become so rigid that they prevent us from accepting the new way of thinking that Christ brings.

2. Sabbath and the Son of Man,

Scriptures reading Luke 6: 1-5, One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grain fields; and His disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands and eat the kernels. Some of the Pharisees asked, "Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?"

Jesus answered them, "Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions." Then Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."

In Jewish legal tradition, there were 39 categories of activities forbidden on the Sabbath. And harvesting was one of them. The teachers of the law even went so far as to describe different methods of harvesting. One method was to rub the heads of grain between the hands, as the disciples were doing here. God’s law said farmers were to leave the edges of their fields unplowed so travelers and the poor could eat from this bounty (Deuteronomy 23:25), so the disciples were not guilty of stealing grain. Neither were they breaking the Sabbath by doing their daily work on it. In fact, though they may have been violating the Pharisees’ rules, they were not breaking any divine law.

The Pharisees thought their religious system had all the answers. They could not accept Jesus because he did not fit into their system. We could miss Christ for the same reason. Beware of thinking that you or your church has all the answers. No religious system is big enough to contain Christ completely or to fulfill perfectly all his desires for the world.

Each week 12 consecrated loaves of bread, representing the 12 tribes of Israel, were placed on a table in the temple. This bread was called the bread of Presence. After its use in the temple, it was to be eaten only by priests. Jesus, accused of Sabbath-breaking, referred to a well-known story about David (1 Samuel: 21:1-6). On one occasion, when fleeing from Saul, David and his men ate this consecrated bread. Their need was more important than ceremonial regulations. Jesus was appealing to the same principle: human need is more important than human regulations and rules. By comparing himself and his disciples with David and his men, Jesus was saying, “If you condemn me, you must also condemn David.”

3. Sabbath and Saving Lives

Scriptures reading: Luke 6: 6-11, On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled. The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shriveled hand, "Get up and stand in front of everyone." So he got up and stood there. Then Jesus said to them, "I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?" He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He did so, and his hand was completely restored. But they were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.

According to tradition of the religious leaders, no healing could be done on the Sabbath. Healing, they argued, was practicing medicine, and a person could not practice his or her profession on the Sabbath. It was more important for the religious leaders to protect their laws than to free a person from painful suffering.

Jesus’ opponents were furious. Not only had Jesus read their minds, he also flouted their laws and exposed the hatred in their hearts. It is ironic that it was their hatred, combined with their zeal for the law that drove them to lot murder – an act was clearly against the law.

No stubborn Heart, we need to keep our hearts pliable, so we can accept Jesus’ New life-changing message.

The day God set aside for rest and worship. Among the Jews, the Sabbath is the Saturday. Among Christians, it’s the 1st day (Sunday). Jews’ Sabbath cannot offer help to the needy people; on Sunday,

Christians can do good to save others’ life. (Lk.6:9)

3.      Sabbath and Saving Lives:

As the Son of God, Jesus had the authority to overrule the terms, so we must do good things:

Obeying His commands to study bible, humbly serving and saving others’ life, set a life of glorify to the Lord.
